Selection of RNA-binding peptides in vivo
Article Abstract:
A method for identifying specific RNA-binding peptides using the arginine-rich RNA-binding motif as a framework is described. The arginine-rich motif may be a versatile framework for recognizing RNA structures. This was observed with the isolation of peptides from two combinatorial libraries that bind tightly and specifically to the Rev response element of HIV. Apparently, alpha-helical peptides resembling Rev were selected from one library while new peptides that probably do not form helices were selected from the other.

Moonlighting at the pole
Article Abstract:
A protein complex responsible for bicoid RNA localization is identified, revealing that it is identical to a complex that helps in dictating where certain membrane proteins end up within the cell. The mammalian endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT)-II is found to interact with a protein that stimulates mRNA transcription, indicating that ESCRT-II might associate with selected mRNAs at an early stage of their synthesis.

RNA enzymes for RNA splicing
Article Abstract:
It has been established that a protein-free complex of only two of the spliceosome's RNA elements catalyzes a reaction that is closely linked with the first catalytic stage of splicing. It is suggested that the highly conserved spliceosomal protein Prp8 could function as a cofactor, possibly stabilizing the RNA structures needed for catalysis.
