Sexual selection resulting from extrapair paternity in collared flycatchers
Article Abstract:
Most bird species are believe to have a socially monogamous mating systems, with most sexually dimorphic. Secondary sexual characters may be subject to quick changes and diversification linked to speciation. The relative importance of two modes of selection, fecundity and extrapair paternity, in sexual selection on male plumage traits, in collared flycatchers, has been assessed. Significant directional selection was observed when number of offspring recruiting to the breeding population was the measure of male fitness. It is suggested that the sperm competition pathway represented 64-90% of the total sexual selection.
