Stress-induced domain reorientation in urea inclusion compounds
Article Abstract:
The cooperative networks that are formed and broken during deformation are disrupted by impurities that can bring about elastic responses in organic crystals by providing nucleation sites. Urea inclusion compounds have molecules of a hydrogen-bonded urea network, which are useful as models to study long-range interactions and cooperative phenomena in crystals. A knowledge of the relationships within the inclusion compounds enables the development of ferroelastic crystals containing different types of guest-host networks to gain an insight into the ferroelectric switching processes.

One and one make four
Article Abstract:
The structure of the HIV genomic RNA is discussed. The HIV virion consists of two identical RNA molecules joined in parallel at their 5' ends. This structure is known to be crucial in the ability for high genetic recombination of HIV. A study showing that the parallel dimerization is due to a quadruplex structure formed by two identical sites of RNA molecules is discussed.

Regulation of axon growth in vivo by activity-based competition
Article Abstract:
A rule of activity-based competition between neighboring axons that appears to govern the growth and branching of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon arbors in the developing optic tectum of zebrafish is demonstrated. The results identify a new form of activity-based competition rule that might be a key regulator of axon growth and branch initiation.
