Survival of juvenile black brant during brood rearing
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to estimate the survival rate of black brant goslings between hatching and fledgling from 1987 and 1989 on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska. Results revealed that survival rate averaged at 81% and ranged from 66%-92%. Combining brood success and gosling survival gave an overall survival rate of 68%. Mortality occurred at the first 15 days, but survival on the basis of age ratios of birds captured were biased low. These results show that average gosling survival rate is higher than other species of geese.

Testing for handling bias in survival estimation for black brant
Article Abstract:
Researchers tested the data obtained in surveys of black brant geese to analyse the effects on mortality rates of capturing and handling the geese during banding procedures. They concluded that handling produced no bias. This was consistent with their hypothesis that individual birds which were more sensitive to handling would have a higher probability of death from other causes. The researchers used the SURVIV program with an ultrastructure approach to analyse the data.
