Article Abstract:
The malarial parasite varies the proteins on the surface of the infected cell to remain hidden from the host's immune system. The key elements in the strategy of antigenic variation are a large gene family, the ability to activate only one gene and keep the others silent (allelic exclusion) and the ability to switch the active gene which is thought to be due to two regulatory elements, a promoter and a large intron in the var genes of the parasite.

Structural basis for Duffy recognition by the malaria parasite Duffy-binding-like domain
Article Abstract:
The crystal structure of the P. knowlesi Duffy-binding-like (DBL) domain (Pk(alpha)-DBL), which binds to DARC receptor during invasion of human erythrocytes is presented. An analysis of Pk(alpha)-DBL and P. falciparum EBA-175 provides a framework for the understanding of malaria parasite DBLs, and affect the development of new prophylactic and therapeutic strategies.
