The first elementary particle
Article Abstract:
The electron has maintained its status as an elementary particle since its 1897 discovery by J.J. Thomson. However, other elementary particles were later discovered, including the positron, muon, pion, kaon, hyperon and neutrino. However, the absence of a purely empirical way of distinguishing composite and elementary particles has made it difficult to categorically state which particle is the most elementary. The electron is now known as just one of three electrically charged leptons, together with muons and tauons.
