The Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at University College of London was created to apply new scientific discoveries to crime prevention, not just crime solving. The article describes several of the institute's current projects, among them the application of evolutionary theory to prediction of homicide rates.

The UK-based energy company BP is investigating the chemistry that governs the reaction between water, oil and reservoir. According to the researchers, decreasing the salinity of the water could prevent oil drops form becoming trapped in the pores.
