DNA destroyers
Article Abstract:
Research describing the degradation of DNA during apoptosis is presented. During apoptosis cells destroy their genomic DNA and the enzyme endonuclease G is implicated in this process despite its positive role in healthy cells.

Transcriptional regulator of programmed cell death encoded by Caenorhabditis elegans gene ces-2
Article Abstract:
The cell-death specification-2 (ces-2) gene of Caenorhabditis elegans encodes a basic region leucine-zipper transcription factor that controls programmed cell death. The CES-2 protein contains 211 amino acids, and its DNA binding specificity and structure are similar to those of the PAR (proline- and acid-rich) proteins of bZIP family of transcription factors. The ces-2 gene negatively regulates the activity of ces-1 gene. The study indicates that CES-2/PAR family transcription factors are evolutionarily conserved regulators of programmed cell death.

CED-4 is a stranger no more
Article Abstract:
Work by Chinnaiyan and colleagues and by Seshagiri and Miller, sheds more light on the role that CED-4 protein plays in molecular death. CED-4 is shown to interact directly and simultaneously with CED-9 and CED-3, and is essential for cell death in Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode worm. This shows that it must have a specific proapoptotic activity. Zou and colleagues have also shown that the sequence of Apaf-1 has similarities to CED-4.
