EST databases as a source for molecular markers: Lessons from Helianthus
Article Abstract:
A discussion on the somewhat underappreciated yet clearly important application of expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR), the development of markers from existing EST databases for use in evolutionary and/or conservation studies in related taxa, is presented. It includes a case study in which the publicly available cultivated sunflower, Helianthus annuus, (EST) database was used to develop (SSR) markers for use in the genetic analysis of a rare sunflower species, H. verticillatus, as well as the more widespread H. angustifolius.

Chloroplast DNA variation confirms a single origin of domesticated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)
Article Abstract:
A study reconsiders the issue of single versus multiple origins of sunflower domestication based on patterns of chloroplast deoxyribonucleic acid (cpDNA) variation. Results do not provide insight into the specific location of sunflower domestication, but the relative rarity of the primary domesticated haplotypes in the wild, and its dissimilarity with those found in the Mexican populations, provides further evidence that the extant domesticated sunflowers are the product of a single domestication event somewhere outside of Mexico.

Genetic architecture of leaf ecophysiological traits in Helianthus
