F- phenocopies: Characterization of expression of the F transfer region in stationary phase
Article Abstract:
Discussion on the role of F transfer in adaptive mutation in starved or stationary-phase cells appears contradictory to the notion of F- phenocopies. Studies were undertaken to determine whether the F transfer apparatus is entirely dismantled during stationary phase. Results indicated that F-pilus transfer apparatus is maintained in the cell envelope following down-regulation of traM transcription. A low level of nicking at oriT in stationary phase was also present.

Effects of gene disruptions in the nisin gene cluster of Lactococcus lactis on nisin production and producer immunity
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze disruptions in several genes of the nisin gene cluster of Lactococcus lactis and their impact on the production of nisin and producer immunity. The disruption of the NisB gene was carried out using an integrative plasmid. Results indicated that the Nisl gene supports a critical function in nisin immunity and cooperates with nisFEG-encoded proteins to promote a high level of immunity.
