Genetic evidence for undetected alleles and unexpected parentage in the gray-breasted jay
Article Abstract:
Protein electrophoresis was performed to gather data on multiple parentage in gray-breasted jay broods. Data was gathered from 43 nests via blood, muscle or feather samples from 142 nestlings and from adult birds at the nests. Multiple parentage was difficult to establish due to an undetected allele at the leu-gly-gly peptidase locus. Several observed inconsistencies were attributed to various reasons such as multiple paternity and nest usurpation. Some females are believed to gain a phenotypic benefit from mating with multiple male partners.

A predictive model of wetland habitat use on Guam by endangered Mariana Common Moorhens
Article Abstract:
The Mariana Common Moorhen on Guam is an endangered species. Examination of the species identified two variables distinguishing between moorhen presence or absence at a wetland. The average number of moorhens was not dictated by the amount of vegetation cover. Moorhen presence was more likely to be based on wetland availability. The amount of seasonal and permanent habitat available to moorhens could be increased by enhancement and management of larger natural wetlands.
