Oxidation of methyl-substituted naphthalenes: pathways in a versatile Sphingomonas paucimobilis strain
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the effects of methyl-substituted aromatic isomers on the metabolic pathways in washed cell suspensions of Sphingomonas paucimobilis strain which was grown on 2,6 dimethylnaphthalene as a carbon and energy source. An isolate taken from a phenanthrene enrichment culture of Sphingomonas paucimobilis was utilized. Results revealed that enzymes with relaxed substrate specificity initiated the metabolism of the methyl group.

Use of 13C nuclear magnetic resonance to assess fossil fuel biodegradation: fate of (1-(super 13)C) acenaphthene in creosote polycyclic aromatic compound mixtures degraded by bacteria
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the applicability of 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to the biodegradation of hydrocarbon mixtures by using synthetic (1-(super 13)C)acenaphthene. The tracer compound was introduced into creosote polycyclic aromatic compound mixtures degraded by different undefined, mixed and axenic bacterial cultures. Results indicate that the technique may be useful in the evaluation of bioremediation performance.

Oxidation of naphthenoaromatic and methyl-substituted aromatic compounds by naphthalene 1,2-dioxygenase
Article Abstract:
The Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1(pRE695) naphthalene 1,2 dioxygenase acts on methyl-substituted aromatic acids to produce benzylic alcohols. The alcohols are methyl group monooxygenation products which are converted to their carboxylic acids by dehydrogenases in the host strain. The enzyme also acts as a sulfoxygenase and catalyzes the monooxygenation of the sulfur heteroatom of 3-methylbenzothiophene.
