Purification and characterization of a prolidase from Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei IFPL 731
Article Abstract:
Purification of a peptidase from the cell extract of Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei IFPL 731 reveals its special characteristics. The enzyme has a molecular mass of 41 kDa and is a monomer. The optimum pH of the enzyme is between 6.5 and 7.5 and the optimum temperature is 55 degree centigrade. A complete inhibition of enzyme activity by metal chelating chemical reagents indicates that the purified enzyme is a metalloenzyme. The specificity and kinetic parameters of the enzyme are described. The Vmax and the Michaelis constant (K(sub m)) for various proline-specific peptidases are presented.

Growth inhibition of metronidazole-susceptible and metronidazole-resistant strains of Gardnerella vaginalis by lactobacili in vitro
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the ability of vaginal Lactobacillus species to inhibit the growth of metronidazole(MTZ)-susceptible and -resistant strains of Gardnerella vaginalis (G. vaginalis). MTZ-resistant gardnerellae were found to be more resistant to growth inhibition by Lactobacillus culture filtrates. Results indicated that lactic acid and a low hydrogen-ion concentration are more essential for G. vaginalis growth inhibition than H2O in vitro.
