Toxin production by Microcystic aeruginosa as a function of light in continuous cultures and its ecologic significance
Article Abstract:
Toxin production and toxin production rate of Microcystis aeruginosa cells increase with light intensity. They followa bell-shaped curve with maximum production achieved at a light intensity of 40microeinsteins per meter squared per second. This was based on experiments designed to study the effect of light intensity and quality on M. aeruginosa toxins. Results also show that light quality had no significant effect on toxicity. Findings also reveal that altering light intensity can uncouple toxinproduction from cell protein synthesis.

Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the effects of cellular metabolism and viability on metal ion accumulation by cultured biomass from a bloom of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. Cells immobilized in alginate and cells suspended in culture medium demonstrated the sorption of nickel, cadmium and copper by cultured biomass. Formaldehyde-treated, heat-killed and air-dried biomass samples sorbed about as much copper as did viable samples.

Differential responses of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria to salinity and osmotic streses
Article Abstract:
Changes in the growth, nitrogen fixation and protein synthesis due to ionic and osmotic stresses in two cyanobacterial strains were discussed. Anabaena sp strain L-31 and Anabaena tolurosa were subjected to nitrogenase activity measurements, in vivo radiolabeling, electrophoresis and protein autoradiography. Results indicate that the response of the two isolates to salinity and to osmotic stresses are different and independent.
