Vertical and seasonal variations of bacterioplankton subgroups with different nucleic acid contents: Possible regulation by phosphorus
Article Abstract:
Flow cytometry is used to examine seasonal variations in basin-scale distributions of bacterioplankton in Lake Biwa, Japan, a large mesotrophic freshwater lake with an oxygenated hypolimnion. Results hypothesize that in severely P-limited environments like Lake Biwa, P-limitation exerts more severe constraints on the growth of bacterial groups with higher nucleic acid contents.

Growth and grazing mortality rates of phylogenetic groups of bacterioplankton in coastal marine environments
Article Abstract:
Dilution culture experiments are conducted in western North Pacific coastal regions to determine growth and grazing mortality rates of bacterial phylogenetic groups detected by fluorescent in situ hybridization. Growth rates varied greatly among different groups, and they are related to environmental variables in a group-specific fashion.

Direct and indirect effects of protist predation on population size structure of a bacterial strain with high phenotypic plasticity
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the impact of grazing and substrate supply on the size structure of a freshwater bacterial strain, which showed pronounced morphological plasticity. It was observed that the filament formation was enhanced even without direct contact of bacteria with bacterivores.
