AlliedSignal starts its hostile offer to take over AMP

AMP Inc., a leading manufacturer of electronic connectors which is based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, will be acquired by AlliedSignal Inc. in a hostile takeover bid which is valued at $9.99 billion. Industry analysts have said that AlliedSignal's acquisition bid has created uncertainty among investors, who have pushed down AlliedSignal's stock value in recent days. AMP, which is protected by state laws from a hostile takeover, has advised its shareholders not to take action until its board evaluates the offer from AlliedSignal.

AMP appoints Ripp as Chairman, CEO

AMP Inc. appointed Robert Ripp as its new chairman and CEO at the same time it formally turned down a hostile offer by AlliedSignal Inc. AlledSignal made an hostile bid of $9.99 billion for the company. Mr. Ripp was formerly an executive vice president with AMP. He was chosen by the company's board to head the fight to prevent AlliedSignal's hostile offer of $44.50 per share. AMP perceived the offer as being too low.
