Fighting escalates along Afghan border

Russian troops and Islamic Tajik rebels fought on the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and Russian troops ended up attacking Afghan citizens during the skirmishes. The rebels want to create an Islamic government, but peace talks have not been successful in resolving any issues.

Armenian forces attacked Azerbaijan in May 1992. A surprise counteroffensive by Azerbaijani forces in Nagorno-Karabakh in Jun 1992 helped Azerbaijan win back much of the region it had lost. Abulfaz Elchibey won the presidential election in Azerbaijan.
