Orchardist hopes new snack will be apples
Article Abstract:
Leo de Groot broadened the market of his Westernport Orchards apple business by teaming with Food Science Australia to develop the diced apple product Snack Apple. The two companies developed a diced apple preservation technique of dipping the fruit pieces in pineapple juice and coating them with an edible plant extract. Westernport Orchards spent $1 million installing a stainless-steel processing facility. Marketing Snack Apple will be a challenge, but de Groot predicts that by August 2000, the product will achieve $600,00 in local sales and $400,000 in sales to Japan.
