Nintendo's monster mash unleashes hidden power

The success of the Nintendo Company Ltd. video-game line Pokemon has prompted its creator and original sponsor to market the game as a long-lived franchise with related products. Tsunekazu Ishihara, the game's original sponsor and creator Satoshi Tajiri, both of whom share royalties with Nintendo, are marketing Pokemon "monsters" in the form of books, children's television shows, card games, and other globally licensed goods. Sales of Pokemon-related items could hit $6 billion in 2000.
