Normandy Mining and its subsidiary, Commercial Minerals, are increasing their growth potential outside their primary gold-mining business. A magnesium project is expected to double Commercial's revenue between 1998 and 2003. The companies are also involved in zinc oxides, zinc dust, bentonite and kaolin projects, and plan to enter the borates industry.

Pasminco sinks in zinc

Australia's biggest producer of zinc, Pasminco, hopes that it will establish itself as an independent company and will be able to relist its shares at the stock exchange. The rising value of the Australian dollar, coupled with new zinc mines entering the market has placed new pressure on Pasminco and its bank.

Normandy gets 'fit for battle'

Mining giant Normandy Mining has reaffirmed its commitment to the gold industry, despite the low dollar and falling gold prices. The company is restructuring and selling non-core assets in order to focus on gold production, which will increase by 15% to 2.3 million ounces/y.
