Quark quits its quest for Adobe Systems
Article Abstract:
Quark Inc. (Denver, CO), a graphic software publisher, has dropped its plans to acquire its rival, Adobe Systems Inc. (San Jose, CA). According to sources, Quark didn't want to pursue Adobe in a hostile deal, since Adobe had spurned all of Quark's advances. Few analysts took the acquisition proposal seriously, since Quark has no shares to use as currency and is a smaller, privately held company. Analysts also point out that products and technologies become obsolete very rapidly, and the most valuable assets in high-technology firms are it's engineers, which can come and go as they please. According to Fred Ebrahimi, the CEO and president of Quark, Adobe never returned any of their calls making it clear that Adobe did not want to pursue any type of friendly transaction.

Article Abstract:
IBM reported first quarter earnings up 42% and revenue up 17% over the same period last year. Analysts feel it is the company's strong customer service orientation that sets it apart from Compaq Computer. Worldwide figures showed hardware sales up 17% and services up 19%. Even though PC sales were up 50%, the company loses money on the profit margin. Sales of services and software comprised 60% of the firm's gross profit.
