Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which is now ranked No. 3 in BRW top 500 public companies has posted a net profit, which is just under 50% more than its profits in the last corresponding period. Its Chief Executive David Murray is now focused on countering the retail deposit competition. He says that the bank is responding through a combination of product and service initiatives.

David Morgan, chief executive of the Westpac Banking Corporation announced a net profit of 2.18 billion dollars for the financial year 2002-03. However, conditions in the 2003-04 are expected to be tougher as the Reserve Bank's decision to increase official interest rates would lead to a reduction in demand for housing finance.
