Taming of the I.T. shrew
Article Abstract:
Australia's growing information technology (IT) industry is changing rapidly, and so is the workplace where IT is the main business. Unlike other industries, IT workers tend to like change, as it guarantees their positions. Also, the tempo of the IT industry is faster than in others. Salaries, especially merit pay, play a large part in determining IT workplace culture. The industry is about 40,000 workers short, allowing the elite to command salary bargaining power. Because of strategies to boost employee morale, industry turnover has fallen from close to 20% in May 1998 to close to 6%.

Stroppy union faces judgment in the docks
Article Abstract:
Tactics adopted by the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) in its dispute with defense contractor Tenix Group may have far-reaching implications. The union's strike action at Melbourne's Williamstown dockyards is illegal and puts future shipbuilding operations at the facility in jeopardy. The current frigate-building project at Williamstown assures work at the yard only until 2004, and AMWU's actions could prevent the yard's from receiving future contracts.
