The Revolutionary Party gained a considerable majority in the Oct 29, 1995, Tanzania elections. Party member Benjamin W. Mkapa was elected president. Allegations that the elections were filled with irregularities caused some areas to recast ballots.

Tutu named to head truth commission
Article Abstract:
Pres Nelson Mandela named Archbishop Desmond Tutu to head the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which will look into abuses perpetrated during South Africa's apartheid era. The mixed-race commission will work for at least 1.5 years.
