The properties of sequential regressions with multiple explanatory variables
Article Abstract:
The sequential technique used in many multiple signal research projects is consistent with a simultaneous treatment and with other superficially diverse sequential approaches. The conventional residual security return research design can lead to downward-biased guesses of the incremental explanatory power of the accounting variables brought in at the second stage. This result is striking because it suggests that the most common use of a sequential approach is likely to produce biased results.
