The role of Australia's Department of the Treasury is changing. The department has increasing influence on the country's economic policy, but some critics of the department believe that the Treasury is less able to take on initiatives that could bring benefits to Australia. Treasurer Peter Costello and his department will have to take care not to lose credibility while working in an increasingly political environment.
