A minimum wage: will it pay?
Article Abstract:
It is possible to make a number of broad qualitative statements about the likely impact on the UK economy of a national minimum wage (NMW), which the Labour party plans to introduce if it wins the next general election. If an NWM is introduce which is higher than the market clearing rate, then it is likely that redundancies will take place. There could also be strong inflationary pressure on prices, especially if the higher costs for employers of the NMW are not balanced out by job cuts or lower profit margins.

Investment: UK pulling power
Article Abstract:
The UK is popular for inward investment which has a positive effect on job creation and the ability of the economy to meet the demands of both home and export markets. However less indigenous companies may be affected by displaced jobs and activity and there are indirect effects on employment and production in some related industries. Because of the UK's membership of the EU, some companies use their UK facilities as the base for markets beyond Europe.
