AUSTRIA: GROWTH IN VENTURE CAPITAL
Article Abstract:
According to FGG (Finanzierungs-Garantie-Gesellschaft), venture capital available in Austria increased by 50% to Sch 9bn in the first half of 2000. By the end of the year, FGG expects a volume of Sch 18bn. Sch 3.5bn of the total venture capital has been provided with guarantees of state-owned FGG. In 1999, the company took on 39 guarantees with a combined volume of Sch 506mn. Since 1998, 27 Austrian companies have been listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange, Neuer Markt, Easdaq or Zurich Stock Exchange. FGG participated in 13 of the listings through guarantees or venture capital. In the traditional business field of FGG, credit guarantees for projects in the home country, the volume increased from Sch 640mn to Sch 1.25bn in 1999. The guarantee volume of the east-west fund amounted to Sch 447bn in 14 projects.

Austria: New rules to boost venture capital?

According to a Guido Wohlfeil, managing director of MPC Capital Austria, from the beginning of 2002 pension funds in Austria will be allowed to invest up to 5% of their assets in venture capital and private equity. For insurance companies, the limit is 10%. Wohlfeil points out that worldwide, pension funds are among the largest providers of venture capital.

British and German 3i group companies are taking over the venture capital management company Bank Austria TFV (BA-TFV). The Austrian company that was set up 1996 employs 4 staff and manages the Bank Austria High Tech Fund, which has invested in 13 companies. It will be renamed 3i Austria.
