Most nations now profess zeal for world trade and liberalization of trade regulations, but when it comes to home markets, some nations still practice protectionism. The World Trade Organization should address this issue during its Dec 9-13, 1996, conference in Singapore.

The US has successfully avoided trade wars with China and Japan, but the Helms-Burton bill passed by Congress on June 19, 1996, could aggravate trade relations with other countries. The bill is aimed at Cuba, and there is other legislation aimed at Iran and Libya.

Poor countries should benefit from the new multilateral trade round which was launched at the World Trade Organisation meeting in Doha, Qatar in Nov 2001. The new round will cover areas including agriculture, patent rules, agriculture and textiles.
