First-quarter net profit for UK pharmacy chain Alliance Boots PLC fell from 1.77 bil to 387 mil pounds sterling, largely due to a 1.47 bil pounds sterling gain that occurred last year from the sale of Boots Healthcare International. Alliance Boots has agreed to an 11.02 bil pounds sterling bid from a private equity company and the firm's deputy chairman.

Emap sells its French magazine unit

Emap PLC of the United Kingdom has divested its French consumer-magazine assets to Arnoldo Mondadori Editore S.p.A. of Italy for 550 million Euros ($692 million). The largest consumer-magazine publishing house in the United Kingdom is planning to return 285 million Pounds ($525 million) to shareholders.
