BG Bank, Realkredit mull joint holding firm

BG Bank AS and Realkredit Danmark announced that they are discussions concerning a higher level of cooperation and the formation of a joint holding firm. BG bank, which is the third-largest retail bank in Denmark, and Realkredit, the second-ranked mortgage lender in the country, also announced that they will conduct further discussions after the plan's approval of their respective boards. The banks stated that they are aiming for the establishment of closer relationship on the basis of their independent profiles and brands. Observers state that the plan with Realkredit will improve its standing in the banking sector although a merger with Realkredit it not in its best interests.

The table ranks the top 50 banks in Russia based on capital in millions of Russian rubles as of year-end 1997. Sberbank Rossii is ranked No. 1 with 16,400,379 million rubles in 1997 capital, a 7% rise from 1996 capital. The second-highest bank was Vneshtorgbank with 6,251,791 million rubles in 1997 capital, a 3% rise from its 1996 figures. Unexim Bank was No. 3 with 5,860,737 million rubles in 1997 capital, registering a 103% rise over 1996 capital. Data on 1997 assets, 1997 loans and profits, and return on assets were included in the list compiled by Rating Information Center.
