UK-based Bankers Trust arranged the debt of the largest leveraged buyout (LBO) in Europe in 1997, when the French and UK private hospital activities of Compagnie Generale des Eaux were sold for 1.1 billion pounds sterling through an institutional buyout in the summer of 1997. Bankers Trust provided 3.75 billion pounds sterling of subordinated facilities and senior debts for 15 European and UK transactions in 1997. Bankers Trust managing director Matthew Collins claims European transactions are handled more quickly than those in the US.

The table of lead debt arrangers in major UK buyouts during 1997 is led by Bankers Trust with seven deals together worth 2.43 billion pounds sterling. Among the major UK buyouts during the year were the 749 million pounds sterling management buyout of Brent Walker's William Hill betting shops and bookmaking business and the 563 million pounds sterling divestment of 1,428 public houses by Bass.
