Banking on change in the Spanish M&A market
Article Abstract:
The strategic purchase of Spanish regional banking activity Bankoa by French-based Credit Agricole is part of an overall plan to expand into the Basque region of Spain without having to take the slower route of developing new branches. Credit Agricole paid 44 million pounds sterling for 95% of Bankoa in October 1997, after a bid by shareholder Caja Rural Vasca failed. Bankoa has assets valued at 390 million pounds sterling with 35 branches in the Basque area, although it only has 1.5% of market share in the region.
