By-passing Russia
Article Abstract:
A new petroleum pipeline and railroad route through Georgia from Azerbaijan provides transportation links without passing through Russia. The European Union aims to reduce the control exercised by Russia on trade with Central Asia through transportation links. Russia faces competition since the pipeline has lower tariffs than the pipeline passing through Chechnya, Russia. The biggest petroleum company in Russia, Lukoil, holds a 10% stake in the consortium which exports petroleum from offshore Azerbaijan, and is also to help operate the pipeline.
