Calling for better design
Article Abstract:
A study looking into 20 call centres, in the UK, found the fit out elements along with having a suitably sized and well configurated building was important to make it successful. The Darlington, England, based call centre run by Orange was a well designed environment. Employees were able to take benefit from other seating areas when not working and a modern restaurant. It is anticipated the number of British people employed in call centres will increase to 2.2% by 2000, from 1.6% in 1997. Call-centres have to ensure their employees are happy at work in order to keep them.

Talking to the building user
Article Abstract:
A post occupancy evaluation can provide organisations with valuable information about how people are using the building they work in and highlight any areas of dissatisfaction and inefficiency. A survey was carried out in Lloyds Bank United Kingdom Retail Banking headquarters in Bristol six months after the Bank had moved in. Covering areas from access and circulation to floor surfaces and amenities, it found several points where improvements could be made as well as much positive feedback. The results were communicated to staff and many have been acted upon.

Building rapport
Article Abstract:
Maccreanor and Lavington have designed a sun room extension for a house in Northern Ireland. The building is the first scheme to be completed by the practice that was set up in 1990. The main house was built of brick in the 1950s and lies in semi-rural surroundings. The extension had to create a gentle edge to the house and blend in with its surroundings. The budget was only 10,000 pounds sterling so cheap materials had to used but with careful detailing to produce the best effect.
