Can China change?
Article Abstract:
The 50th anniversary of the Chinese communist party is celebrated in such a way that a future without the party is made to seem impossible, yet Chinese culture can accept political liberalization, which has occurred elsehwere in Taiwan and Hong Kong. China has made economic progress, but could have made more without the communist party in power. The state needs to withdraw from involvement in the economy if further economic progress is to be made. The leaders aim to improve their control of state assets rather than surrendering them.

The new pioneers
Article Abstract:
Xinjiang, China, has been colonised on a large scale by Han Chinese since 1954 when the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps was set up. Xinjiang is a large area which accounts for a sixth of China as a whole. The indigenous people are mainly Uighurs, though Shehezi is a city that is 96% Han. Elsewhere the Han are in a minority, outnumbered by three to two. Shehezi is similar to cities in the coastal areas of China, and is clean and orderly.
