Carriers fasten safety belts for rough ride ahead
Article Abstract:
Industry analysts have lowered their estimates of the passenger traffic that European airlines are expected to have in 1999, and have decreased estimated earnings for the year, as well. The level of fixed costs and the slower global economy in 1999, which softens prices, are two of the reasons for this forecast. Alliances among carriers is one method by which many observers expect airlines to deal with the situation.

PRESSWATCH: EU ENLARGEMENT
Article Abstract:
The entrance of new member nations into the European Union (EU) will not happen soon. Most of the EU members believe that enlargement could not happen before 2006. This attitude is in sharp contrast to the rhetoric espoused by politicians such as Jacques Chirac and Helmut Kohl who were saying that members might be able to join as early as the year 2000.
