Cause for concern
Article Abstract:
Inflation forecasts for the United Kingdom in a year's time have increased for five groups of six surveyed in Sep 1997 compared with Jun 1997. Four groups also increased forcasts for the two years from Sep 1997. though labor unionists and business economists revised their forecasts downwards. The forecast from the general public gives some cause for soncern since it has increased to 4.4% from 4.2% for the year from sep 1997 compared to the Jun 1997 forecast. The Bank of England may be concerned about these upward revisions.

Dangerous territory
Article Abstract:
Six groups surveyed on their expectations of inflation a year ahead forecast a rise to 3.6% in Dec 1997 compared to 3.5% in Sep 1997. The specialist groups reported a rise to 3.4% from 3.3%, while the general public's forecast rose to 4.5% from 4.4% in this period. The general public's forecast for two years ahead was also high, at 5.2% in Dec 1997 compared with 5% three months previously. A debate on the need to tighten policy to tackle the problem of inflation could have increased the concern of the public on this issue.

About to take off?
Article Abstract:
A regular survey of UK inflation expectations shows that three specialist groups forecast a rise in inflation. Average forecasts rise to 3.3% from 3.1% and there has not been such as rise since the start of 1995. The biggest upward revision was made by labor unionists. The survey was carried out in 1996 following the publication of data on the retail price index for Jul 1996 showing a 2.2% level of inflation. The forecast rises tend to be modest, but thisis a warning sign.
