OTC pharmaceuticals in Germany
Article Abstract:
Sales of over-the-counter medicines (OTC) were worth DM1.3 billion in East Germany and DM7.3 billion in West Germany although the potential market for all OTC medicines is much higher, at DM14.0 billion in the West and DM2.7 billion in the East. Pharmaceuticals sold to treat coughs and colds hold the largest market share which has increased in both the East and West from DM1.35 billion in 1995 to DM1.43 billion in 1996. Germany has 70,000 outlets selling OTC medicines of which 21,290 are pharmacies. Changes to laws concerning prescription drugs may result in increased sales of OTC drugs.

The German pharmaceutical industry's output in 1995 was worth DM32.5 billion, according to the Statistisches Bundesamt. The industry is believed to have expanded by around 4% in value terms in 1996, with exports rising by around 5% from 1995's DM16,074 million. Imports are estimated to have risen by 5% to 10% in 1996, having increased by 8% in 1995 to DM10,736 million. Sales of medicines through pharmacies rose by 5.4% in 1996 from 1995 to DM24.9 billion at msp, with prescription-only medicines accounting for DM16.8 billion.

In 1996, German production of pharmaceuticals increased 5% to 34.1 billion Deutsche Marks (DM), with an estimated drop of 1% in 1997. Growth in foreign trade was reported for both 1996 and 1997. Cosmetics and toiletries accounted for DM8.07 billion of total production in 1996, with production of hair care products and fragrances suffering losses. An overview of the market and its individual sectors is given, including forecasts for the future.
