China sets its own pace for reforms

Article Abstract:

China will not compromise its employment levels and its key industries in its application for membership in the World Trade Organization. China is prepared to enact economic reforms that would open its economy, but would like to maintain workers' livelihoods and its control of its industrial base. Industrial output from state-run enterprises has decreased to 30% from its 90% level in 1978, and that prices of 95% of consumer products are market-driven. China is reluctant to release its hold on state-run enterprises since the move will result in bankruptcies and mergers, that may eventually threathen livelihood.

U.S. lifts threat of tariffs on tv sets from Samsung

Article Abstract:

The Department of Commerce will be lifting the antidumping duties which was imposed in mid-1980s on Samsung Electronics Corp colored television sets due to "changed circumstances." Samsung was meted with the antidumping duties for selling at a substantially lowered price Korean color tv sets in the country. But since 1985 until 1991, no evidence of such activity has been associated with Samsung. However, the 2 other Korean color television producers, LG Electronis Inc and Daewoo Electronics Co will still be under the antidumping regulation.
