China takes a new look at divorce
Article Abstract:
China has liberal divorce laws, and divorce has been rising, especially in urban areas. This can create problems such as women left with children and no maintenance, and women becoming homeless because the family home was tied to the husband's job. There are proposals to amend the divorce laws and make divorce more difficult. A three-year separation may be needed, and extra-marital sex could become a criminal offense. Couples in rural areas tend to stay married, and their marriages have often been organized by their families.
