Columbia rail back on track
Article Abstract:
The Columbian government is restoring state-owned railways across the country to their former condition. The railways are in a derelict state. Government officials hopes to encourage freights to use railways rather than the road network. Railway lines stretching 1500-kilometers between Bogata, Columbia, and Santa Marta, Columbia, are to be repaired by the Corsorcio ferrocarril de la Paz consortium. The 499-kilometer railway between Buenaventura and Cali is also to be restored.

Jakarta light rail
Article Abstract:
Plans to build a light railway system and underground system in Jakarta, Indonesia, have been approved by Indonesian President Suharto. Tenders for construction are expected to begin in November 1995, and the system is schedule to begin operations in 2000. However there are concerns about the cost of laying all the tracks underground, although the ministry of communications has estimated it would cost about $1.3 billion.

Going to work on the Jakarta subway
Article Abstract:
A consortium comprising Asea Brown Boveri, Taylor Woodrow, Siemens, Ferrostahl, AEG and Itochu has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the government in Indonesia to design the planned subway system for Jakarta. The consortium may also win the construction contract for the project.
