Computing with molecules
Article Abstract:
There is speculation that individual molecules can be used in computers as components. University of California, Los Angeles scientists have been collaborating with Hewlett Packard and have announced that they have developed a molecular switch which could be employed in building logic gates. Molecules have to be designed so that they link up spontaneously into the arrangement required. Thiol groups containing sulfur can be used as alligator clips to do this.

Bright sparks charge ahead
Article Abstract:
There is a general trend in the electronic component distribution market for small- and medium-sized companies to consolidate their positions in order to compete with their larger rivals. Sales in the sector continue to grow, although more slowly than in 1993/94, with a growth of 13% forecast for 1996, rising to nearly 15% in 1997. Distributors have also benefitted from the rising market for electric components and the popularity of cellular telephones.

Light headed: computing random numbers
Article Abstract:
Mathematician Landon Noll and others have conceived the idea of using lava lamps to help computers produce sequences of random numbers. The 'lava' inside a lamp moves in a truly random manner while computers are precise and are innately unable to create such random numbers.
