General surgery
Article Abstract:
Many surgeons are discovering that minimal surgery can be as effective as more extensive surgery. This had been documented in patients with stomach and breast cancer as well as melanoma. Minimally invasive surgery has also been used to reduce lung volumes in patients with emphysema and to reduce the size of the heart in patients with congestive heart failure. Liver trauma has also benefitted from a minimally invasive approach. Laparoscopic surgery still remains controversial. It appears to be effective in gallbladder, appendix and abdominal surgery but not in the treatment of hernias and bile duct diseases.
