DENMARK: POWER COMPANIES' FINANCES MUST IMPROVE
Article Abstract:
The energy committee of Folketinget, the Danish parliament, has agreed to give support to power companies in order to make them able to improve competitiveness before the deregulation of the market. At present, price pressure as well as political initiatives such as investments in offshore wind power plants, biomass-fuelled plants, demolition of old plants etc. put pressure on power companies' finances. Svend Auken, Minister of Energy and the Environment, is planning to let consumers pay these costs instead of the sector itself. The Minister also says that power companies have to streamline operations, and adds that the number of power companies in Denmark in future should be reduced to two, at the most, from the present eight.
