Dr Reddy's Laboratories is looking for worldwide licensing partners after having made significant progress in its drug discovery programme, Dr Reddy's Research Foundation (DRF). The foundation has made substantial progress in areas related to bacterial infections, cancer and acid peptic disease. DRF has already licensed two of its non-chemical entities to Novo Nordisk. DRF has synthesised and tested over 300 novel molecules of different chemical classes in the anti-infectives segment. (khr)

ABBOTT GOES SMALL-SCALE FOR PRICE FREEDOM

Abbott Laboratories India Ltd, a subsidiary of Abbott Inc of the US, has been given permission by the government to classify its manufacturing facility at Ankleshwar in Gujarat as a small scale unit. The unit has qualified for the classification as investments made in plant and equipment in 1984 were below Rs3 crore. The classification exempts the unit from price control. The unit produces anaesthetic pentothal sodium. (khr)

EC SLAPS DUTIES ON INDIAN ANTIBIOTICS

The European Commission proposes to levy provisional anti-subsidy duties on the import of specific antibiotics from India into the European Union with effect from June 11, 1998. This is likely to affect pharmaceutical companies like Ranbaxy, Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Kopran. These companies export most of their products to Europe. The total duty to be levied varies between 12 to 14 percent. (gsh)
