Denmark: APM to cut costs at Rosti
Article Abstract:
Rosti, the developer and producer of plastic-based products, is to carry out streamlining measures in order to cut costs. A.P.Moller, the owner of Rosti, is to focus on a three-year rescue plan that will entail a number of changes including staff cuts among its 4,000-strong work force. Staffing levels will be further cut once the new plant in China is ready in the second quarter of 2002. The greater part of the company's Danish operations will be concentrated at a new factory in Glostrup, Denmark, whereas the new factory in China is to account for core operations. Rosti is to close down one of its factories in England, which entails a loss of 250 jobs. Some of the production in Scotland will be relocated to the new factory in China. Cuts will be carried out in the USA as well. MD Henrik Vildenfeldt expects the three-yea turn-around operation to be successful. Rosti's biggest product area is technical plastic mainly for mobile phones. The company's division for technical plastic will be concentrated to China as mobile telephone producers such as Ericsson and Motorola are relocating their operations there.

DENMARK: DANAPAK SOLD TO REXAM
Article Abstract:
The British packaging giant Rexam Plc. has acquired the packaging concern Danapak's smallest unit, the production of plastic-based tubs and lids. Danapak is controlled by the Swedish-Danish dairy group Arla Foods The sales price is DKr192mn (US$22.3mn). The deal comprises Danapak's plant in Stilling near Arhus, Denmark, as well as machinery and inventories from the group's plastic tub plant in Nummela, Finland. Rexam has also secured a contract to supply plastic tubs to Arla Foods. According to Danapak managing director, Mikael S. Christiansen, Rexam is to consolidate the Stilling plant whereas the Finnish plant will be closed down. Danapak announced in November last year that its unit for plastic tubs and lids was for sale. The main reason for the sales plans was the merger of Danish MD Foods and Swedish Arla in the spring of 2000. Rexam managing director Rolf Borjesson says the Danapak deal is a strategic move in the group's plastic tub sector.
