Developments in the world motor industry
Article Abstract:
Significant changes have been taking place in the world motor industry, which is now dominated by five or six very large companies. Demand is rising steadily but slowly, and is set to reach around 52 million units in 2000, from around 45 million units in 1995. Car manufacturers are being forced to make a wide range of special offers in order to eliminate surplus stock, and this is in turn having a negative impact on their profit margins. It is clear that manufacturers must reduce costs, and mergers are regarded as a way to bring greater economies of scale and rationalize some production procedures.

World Trade Organisation - recent developments
Article Abstract:
There are major concerns China may be permitted to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2000. It would lead to massive unemployment within China and the potential of its export market would greatly affect the West. The WTO Seattle Conference, US, was disrupted by public protests which included environmentalists and groups from developing countries. There was concern the WTO disproportionately benefited the US and the European Union. The WTO was set up in 1995 to provide an arena for trade talks between its 135 member nations. Its main aim is to improve trade by reducing barriers.

Recent Japanese experience: some policy lessons
Article Abstract:
Trends in Japanese economic policy since 1990 are discussed. It is suggested that a reduction in the exchange rate may be the best way to boost the Japanese economy, although there must be structural reform if long-term economic growth is to be achieved.
