Sales of non-bleach stain removers in France have soared beyond the FF200 milion mark since the category was introduced by Procter & Gamble in June 1995. The category was valued at FF206.6 million in 1997, a 20.8% increase over the previous year. The market is expected to grow further by 16.2% in 1998 to FF240.0 million and 12.5% to FF270.0 million in 1999. The deceleration is due to intense price competition and increased product penetration, which has already forced Procter & Gamble to slash the price of its product, Ace Delicat, by 8%.

The textile washing products sector in France will have to contend with traditionally weak growth rates, a mature market, and the country's protracted recovery from recession to post positive real growth from 1997 to 2002. The establishment of the European Monetary Union is also expected to lead to a weak currency. In real value terms, a 0.5% decline is seen for the textile washing products market. This is equivalent to 782.1 million French francs assuming 1997 price levels for the year 2002.
