FARM, INDUSTRIAL SLOWDOWN HIT GROWTH
Article Abstract:
India suffered a lower growth of 5.1 percent in its gross domestic product (GDP) in 1997-98 (7.5 percent in 1996-97). The fall in the GDP growth was due to the negative growth in the farm segment and the sluggishness in the industrial sector. The production of foodgrains in 1997-98 fell by about 6 million tonnes. The growth in the industrial sector fell 5.8 percent in 1997-98 (6.6 percent in 1996-97). (gs)
